We travelled to 22 states in 6 months in our RV. Heck, we bought an RV! We came home. And have now been adjusting to "normal" life for 9 months!

So you can mostly ignore any stock picks before this post. The general ideas about investing remain the same. I'm hunting for great income investments, quick trades, and still LOVE utilities, YieldCos, and REITs.

The company is a "wires only" utility in Texas that was established by the Hunt Family. They were able to set up the utility as a REIT, which saved on taxes. It's a unique structure that has one major risk - regulators may not allow the company to collect but not pay taxes. The company is in the midst of a rate case, which means the tax risk is heightened. The stock is also down off of its highs and hasn't kept up with either utilities or REITs. I think the market is overvalued and am trying to do two things:

1) Hedge the rest of my portfolio without actually selling.
2) Make some money on a trade that feels right.

The markets have been up almost daily. Not only that, but they seem to strengthen as the day goes on. I realize that those two things should be positive signs. It's bullish to have daily strength and higher highs.

I don't know when I'll stop buying puts on

Buying Volatility Ahead of Trump's Inauguration

I think the market is due for a correction. I also think volatility is FAR too low. It's been at historic lows for quite some time. I've traded volatility a bit since Thanksgiving and the time has come again to get long volatility through the ETF VXX.

I bought 500 shares for $21.11 and bought 5 call option contracts expiring 1/27/2017 with a $21.50 strike price for $0.72. These two transactions give me exposure to 1,000 shares of VXX with a breakeven price of about $21.16. We were at 2.5% and higher as recently as Christmas. The 10-year is now at 2.38%. While the lower rates help my utilities, REITs, and renewable power stock prices, this is also an opportunity for another quick trade.

Today I bought 500 shares of TMV for $22.41/share. TMV is a 3x levered bet that interest rates rise (or that bond prices fall).

I sold today at $22.75/share, netting $0.34/share - or a

10% of My Portfolio is in REITs

10% of my portfolio is in REITs. That may seem high or low to you, but I think it's about right. I'm mostly a dividend income investor, so having high, predicable, and growing income is important.

For that same reason (high, predictable, and growing income), I don't hold any bond funds. The income from bond funds is not predictable or growing and today isn't anywhere near "high". I do own a preferred equity fund, but the income it provides is high (6% yield) and should be stable as most of the

TRADE CLOSED - Short NASDAQ

I sold out of my short NASDAQ trade today. Net proceeds were $8,972.66 vs. purchase price of $8,836.10. This means a gain of $136.56. Not bad for a few days. I feel like it might have more room to run (more downside to the NASDAQ), but I feel like taking my gains before it turns to losses. That's a great recipe to SHORT! This is just a quick trade - for a day or two - to make some fast money. I'll double down after two more up days. I will share dollar amounts for these quick trades because anybody can trade in the amounts I plan to use.

I bought SQQQ, a 3x inverse NASDAQ ETF. I bought 750 shares at $11.80/share. I hope to make at least $0.50/share or $375 on the trade.

Renewable Energy Additions

I'm a big fan of renewable energy. The renewable energy companies are called YieldCos. These companies have long-term (15-30 year) contracts with utilities that tend to have some inflation protection. At the end of the contract life, the assets are still able to produce power and are likely to negotiate new long-term contracts. They have zero variable cost and almost zero fixed costs.

The YieldCos today have dividend yields of 5-8%. I love these companies and the relatively safe income they
